Our Story

It started because I needed it too.

Hey, I'm Jenny, founder of The Teabreak Project.

Life felt very full.

Like a lot of people, I was juggling work, family, homeschooling (thanks lockdown!), house stuff, endless lists and all the tiny things that somehow need remembering.

I wasn't falling apart. I was just constantly doing.

And somewhere in amongst all of that, I'd stopped making much room for the things I actually enjoyed.

After lots of conversations with friends, I realised I definitely wasn't the only one.

“I’ll sit down when I’ve finished this.”
“I’ll do something I enjoy once everything else is done.”
“I just need to get on top of things first.”
“I’ll make time for me later.”

None of us had our shit together. We were all waiting for some mythical point when everything was finished before we'd finally sit down, make something, read something, have a proper cup of tea or just do something because we fancied it.

Of course, that point never arrived.

So I made myself a Teabreak.

I wanted to create something that made stopping easier. No hunting around for a project. No buying twelve different supplies. No trying to decide what to do with the twenty minutes you'd finally found.

Just everything ready and waiting.

Something to make. A proper cuppa. Cake. A playlist. A little ritual that said:

this bit of time is yours.

And because I've always believed that small achievements deserve celebrating, there was a badge too. Naturally.

Why Hummingbirds?

The name came from the logo.

When I was trying to create a Teabreak identity, I wanted something that felt warm and distinctive without making us look like a coffee shop.

I came across the symbolism of the hummingbird - joy, resilience, adaptability and the sweetness of life - and it felt like an unexpectedly perfect fit.

So Hummingbirds they became.

Over time, the name has come to mean much more than simply “someone who gets a Teabreak box”.

She uses the good mug on a Tuesday.
She makes things badly, but with joy.
She eats the cake without needing an occasion.
She takes twenty minutes even though there’s still washing in the basket.
She notices small things, gets curious and tries something new.
She makes room for joy in the middle of ordinary life.

She doesn't always find that easy. Neither do I. We're all practising.

What I realised

The craft wasn't really the point.

At first, I thought I was building a creative subscription box. And technically, I was.

But the more messages I received from Hummingbirds, the more obvious it became that the project itself was only part of the story.

“I loved making this.”
“I actually sat down.”
“I switched off.”
“I did something just for me.”
“I felt like myself again.”

That changed how I thought about Teabreak.

It wasn't really about teaching people new crafts. It was about making it easier to choose something enjoyable before everything else was finished.

The craft was the reason to sit down. The Teabreak was the thing that mattered.

What I believe now

Putting yourself back on the list doesn't mean caring about everyone else less.

I don’t think joy should have to be earned.
I don’t think hobbies need to become productive.
I don’t think rest should only happen once everything is done.
And I definitely don’t think cake needs an occasion.
I think ordinary days deserve good things.
I think the good mug can come out on a Tuesday.
I think twenty minutes spent making something badly, but with joy, is twenty minutes well spent.
I think putting yourself back on the list doesn’t mean caring about everyone else less.

Life probably isn't going to suddenly become less busy. So the goal isn't to wait for calm. It's to make a little room for yourself in the middle of it.

That's what Teabreak is here to help with.

And me?

When I'm not planning future Teabreaks, I'm at home in wild and windy Pembrokeshire.

I live with my husband, our three daughters and Audrey the whippet. I love making things, designing things, spreadsheets far more than is probably normal, good books, cups of tea and finding tiny ideas that turn into much bigger projects.

And yes, on the rare occasions I'm out dancing with friends, there's still a very good chance I'll be looking for tea or hot chocolate by the end of the night.

Some things don't change.

The best bit

Every time someone messages me to say they actually stopped, made their Teabreak and enjoyed a little bit of time that was completely theirs, it still feels like a win.

Because that's really what this whole thing is about. Not becoming a better crafter. Not becoming a calmer, more organised person.

Just remembering that you belong on your own list too.

Big love,

Jenny x

Think you might be a Hummingbird too?

You don't need to have everything under control first.

You don't need to be crafty.

You don't need to wait until life gets quieter.

Just make a little room.
